Become a piano technician10/13/2023 ![]() If you don't plan on doing much regulating or too many repairs, the basic kit will suffice and get you through the course. We simply have them as a convenience for our students. If you do choose to purchase your tools from PTA, you will have three options - the basic kit, the intermediate kit or the upgraded kit. Again, you do NOT need to buy a tool kit from PTA to take our course. For more info please contact with the number of students you wish to enroll. Group rates on tuition are available upon request. The basic tool kit is $215, the intermediate kit is $430 and the upgraded tool kit is $550. You are not required to purchase tools from PTA to complete the course but the tools our staff have selected are used in the training material. PTA sells three different tool kits that can be found here. The course itself is $1500 and includes access to the the online learning material for 12 months as well as printable/downloadable PDFs of the material to keep for future reference. Extensions are given only for extreme cases and are granted by our student coordinator Michael Stilwell CPT. The course must be completed within 12 months of enrollment. ![]() ![]() That being said students should plan to spend about 256-380 hours on the course. We suggest spending at least 8-10 hours on lessons 1-2 and at least 20-30 hours on each lesson after that. Theoretically, the student would do one lesson a week but we allow the student to move as fast as she or he would like. The course is broken up into 14 lessons with quizzes at the end of each lesson. They have passed the PTA’s training requirements and are now certified to advertise using the PTA logo. Preferred Prerequisites: Students wishing to enroll in this program should be able to hear and distinguish pitch, have taken a prior music course-such as band, choir or orchestra – or studied piano privately. There are opportunities for additional training and apprenticeships through piano retailers and manufacturers. Students will earn high school credit as well as two industry certifications (Piano Technicians Guild’s Registered Piano Technician and OSHA) upon high school graduation and may pursue post-secondary training and Master Piano Technician certification at the University of Houston. The Piano Technician program is a collaborative effort between FBISD and the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music. Financial literacy and operating a small business also are part of the curriculum. Students enrolled in the Piano Technician program will study the parts of the piano and their function, as well as how to tune, repair, move, and finish pianos. Transportation will be provided to/from Marshall High School before/after school. Students must transfer to Marshall High School to participate in the program. The Piano Technician program is housed and taught at Marshall High School as a series of four one-year courses to any interested FBISD high school students. Students wishing to pursue a career in music can use their piano tuner/technician skills to pay for their college education. There are no gender or physical limitations for piano tuners and piano technicians beyond the ability to use hand tools and distinguish pitch. The starting salary for a piano tuner is $45,000 and piano technicians earn $60,000+ annually. Due to a lack of training programs, these professionals are in great demand across the world. Piano technicians tune, repair, regulate and voice pianos at concert venues, as well as colleges and universities.
